Aizawl: Mizoram government has decided to give admission to 325 children of Myanmar refugees in schools in the state. Almost 8400 people from Myanmar are taking shelter in Mizoram, including politicians, MPs and Ministers, after the military coup in the neighbouring country in February 2021.
Most of these children had crossed over to the Indian state of Mizoram with their parents to escape from the military crackdown in neighbouring Myanmar.
The director of the Mizoram School Education department has recently issued a circular to all the district education officers and sub-divisional education officers to see that children of Myanmarese refugees in their areas attend schools or online classes like the local children.
Recently, a meeting between Myanmar MPs, currently taking refuge in Mizoram and State Education Minister Lalchhandama Ralte was held in Aizawl. They discussed the plight of the school-going kids taking shelter in Mizoram.
The Myanmar political leaders requested the State Education Minister to make arrangements for refugee children’s continuation of school while in exile in India.
At least 24 legislators of Myanmar, most of them belonging to the Chin community, including Chin State chief minister, are taking shelter in Mizoram since the February 1 military coup.
Meanwhile, schools in Mizoram have reopened in over 300 villages where there are no active COVID cases.
