New Delhi: Key BJP leaders including Union Ministers and Twitteratis have generally welcomed declaring August 1 as the Muslim Women Rights Day.
Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the Government enacted the law against Triple Talaq on 1st August, 2019 which has made the social malpractice of Triple Talaq a criminal offence.
“Muslim Women Rights Day” will be observed across the country tomorrow 1st August 2021, to celebrate the enactment of the law against Triple Talaq, said an official press release from the Ministry.
There was no such day celebrated or observed last year, sources said. Some missives went viral on social media. One such missive is: “Thank you PM Modi for empowering Women”.
Another tweet ran: “MuslimWomenRightsDay marks an important inflection point in India’s journey towards social justice!”.
Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi, former chairman of National Commission for Minorities, wrote: “Today is a big day for Gender Justice – Happy Muslim Women Rights Day. – Let’s all come together to celebrate ‘Muslim Women Rights Day’.”
Former Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan tweeted: “Law against archaic practice of TripleTalaq enacted on this date ensures that our Muslim sisters live with dignity and respect with their rights upheld”.
One Nupur Sinha wrote on the micro blogging site: “HAPPY MUSLIM WOMEN’S RIGHT DAY Let SOLIDARITY, EQUALITY & FRATERNITY reign supreme. Today 1st August is also Friendship Day , so may we also pledge for communal Harmony and Amity on this day”.
The Union Ministry for Women and Child Welfare has suggested better coordination between the ministries to empower women from the minority communities under provisions linked to nutrition, the national education policy and entrepreneurship.
NCP leader Majeed Memon, however, said observing such a day is only “symbolic”.
“As a matter of fact, we would want to have a clear picture of the position in Muslim society prior to passage of this Bill and also after that”.
The government has said that there has been a significant decline in Triple Talaq cases after the law came into effect.
Muslim women across the country have overwhelmingly welcomed this law, the official release has said.
