A top Maoist Vinod alias Hemla Hunga died of Covid-19 complications in Bastar in Chhattisgarh.
More than half a dozen Maoist leaders have succumbed to Covid-19 in about a month. Last month, Maoist Central Committee member Haribhushan and his wife Sharada had succumbed to Covid-19. They were carrying a bounty of 50 lakh rupees.
Vinod, 62, was a military commander of ‘Darbha division’ and was carrying a combined bounty of 15 lakh rupees, 10 lakh rupees from the Chhattisgarh government, and 5 lakh rupees from NIA.
On May 25, 2013, Maoists attacked a convoy of Congress leaders in Sukma, wiping out the entire state Congress leadership, including Mahendra Karma, Nand Kumar Patel, and Vidya Charan Shukla. Twenty-seven people had died in the attack.
Vinod was also the mastermind of the assassination of BJP MLA Bhima Mandavi on April 9, 2019, in Dantewada.
Earlier, Bastar IG Sundar Raj had appealed to Maoists to surrender and avail Covid-19 treatment and vaccine.
