Guwahati: The accused was involved in the rape and murder of a minor girl.
Assam police on duty shot an accused individual as he tried to escape from its custody in the early hours on July 2.
Later the rape and murder accused Syed Ali was rushed to Guwahati medical college hospital for necessary treatments.
Assam police source claimed that the 65-year-old cleric of the Bhuragaon area in Morigaon district, who was arrested on 27 June for raping and murdering a minor girl, received bullet injuries on his knees. He was taken to the site by the police to reconstruct the scene of the crime.
But the cleric of a local mosque, who sexually assaulted a nine-year-old girl belonging to the religious minority community, tried to flee from the police custody under the garb of answering nature’s call. The police personnel used minimum force lawfully to prevent it successfully, added the source.
The incident of rape-murder took place on 20 June, when the accused Ali isolated the girl from the family to assault her sexually. Later he disposed of her body in a roll of jute filed at Balidonga village near the Brahmaputra river. Some neighbors identified the cleric as he arrived at the victim’s family to pursue not following up the case.
Visiting the bereaved family recently, State chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted the perpetrator would not be spared. Sarma, also in charge of the State home portfolio, empathized with the victim’s family members and assured them of stringent punishments to the culprit. He reiterated that the safety and security of every citizen remains a priority for the government.
