“ Within a month of his appointment, Dharmendra Chatur has resigned. The social media company did not offer any explanation for his sudden resignation.”

Twitter India interim grievance officer Dharmendra Chatur has resigned from his post. His name was removed from Twitter India’s website and a US address with a mail id was displayed in the Resident Grievance Officer for India column.

The new IT rules, which have come into force from May 25, mandate that all social media companies have a resident grievance officer, a nodal contact person and a chief compliance officer.

The rules were enacted in February this year.

In a letter to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on June 6, Twitter had said it was making full-time appointments to comply with the new IT rules and in the meantime had appointed an interim resident grievance officer.

The new IT rules mandate that these appointments are on the company’s payroll and based in India.

Twitter has locked horns with the Union government as either it has not been complying with the Indian laws or complying very late.

Recently, Twitter India head Manish Maheshwari was booked by the UP Police in a case relating to the circulation of fake news on Twitter.

After the UP Police lodged an FIR, Twitter India MD changed his description in his company profile from ‘Twitter MD’ to ‘Trying to run business at @TwitterIndia’.

The Uttar Pradesh Police had also issued a notice to Dharmendra Chatur.

The Union government had recently withdrawn the intermediary protection of Twitter, thus making it responsible for content posted on the platform.
