Chief Justice Sanjay Yadav asked the petitioner to do some research about the burial practices of communities living along the Ganga ghats.
Dismissing a petition which sought directions to the state to perform the last rites of the bodies buried along the Ganga ghats near Prayagraj, the Allahabad High Court said, “…these are not public interest litigation, but publicity interest litigation.”
The Court added, “We are of the view that the petitioner has not done any research regarding the rites & customs which are there amongst various communities living near Ganga.”
The Court also warned the petitioner that it would impose costs for filing frivolous petitions.
Chief Justice Sanjay Yadav said, “There are ample practices and there are various communities which practice different rites and you have done no research. We are not entertaining such petitions and the relief cannot be granted, do research and come back.”
The vested interests have made a lot of noise about how many bodies were buried along the ghats near Ganga in Prayagraj in April and May this year, at the peak of the second wave of Covid-19.
They alleged these were bodies of Covid victims whose families couldn’t afford last rites.
