Assam Police have arrested seven people in the rape and murder case of two teenage Hindu tribal girls in the Kokrajhar district.

 

The accused are identified as Muzammil Sheikh, Nazibul Sheikh, Farouk Rahman, Hanif Sheikh, Jahanur Islam, Md. Atab Ali and Sankarde Barman.

 

Kokrajhar district Superintendent of Police (SP) Thube Prateek Kumar has confirmed that the three prime accused among the seven arrested have confessed to raping and killing the two tribal girls.

 

The two minor girls, aged 14 and 16, were found hanging from a tree in a village under the Kokrajhar police station on June 11. Police had confirmed that they were raped and killed.

 

Announcing the capture of three main culprits involved in the brutal rape and murder, Assam Cm Himanta Biswa Sarma had tweeted, “Muzammil Sheikh, Nazibul Sheikh and Farouk Rahman arrested for rape and murder of 2 tribal minor girls in Kokrajhar dist.The heinous crime was allegedly committed with the girls first choked to death & their bodies hanged in a tree to hoodwink."
