The Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has got noted lawyer Harish Salve on board to ensure the extradition of the economic offender and fugitive Mehul Choksi.
Choksi is the prime accused in the billion-dollar PNB scam.
Salve, in a statement Monday, said, “I am advising the government of India on what steps to take in the Mehul Choksi case.”
He fled India in January 2018, days before the billion-dollar PNB scam was unearthed and had been staying in Antigua and Barbuda from where he was to be extradited.
He fled Antigua and Barbuda last month and was arrested by the Dominica Coast Guard for trying to enter the country illegally.
His appeal is pending in the Dominica High Court. The next hearing is on June 14.
Senior officers of the Union government are coordinating with the authorities in Antigua & Barbuda and Dominica to ensure Choksi’s return.
