The bank account of an NGO in Gujarat associated with independent MLA Jignesh Mevani, We the People Charitable Trust, has been frozen by the authorities for multiple irregularities.
Mevani, who is not a trustee of the NGO, made an appeal to raise INR 50 lakhs.
The Charity Commissioner YM Shukla issued a press statement informing about the freezing of the bank accounts of the NGO.
On inquiry, it was found that no request was made to the district collector’s office for setting up any Oxygen plant. Also, no resolution to this effect was passed by the NGO.
The NGO was set up in January this year.
Mevani told the press he was not a trustee but made an appeal for raising the fund in his capacity as the ambassador of the NGO.
There is also an issue about the name of the trust as a similar NGO ‘We the People Charitable Society’ has been working in Gujarat since 2003.
The Charity Commissioner also informed the press that he was getting many written and verbal complaints against the NGO.
