Guwahati: Assam, after the State legislative assembly election vote-counts on 2 May, is likely to get its next chief minister after the meeting of newly elected Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators scheduled for Sunday afternoon. General inputs from New Delhi indicate to a new chief minister for Assam replacing the incumbent CM Sarbananda Sonowal.
Leaders of the ruling BJP and its allies (AGP and UPPL) are expected to meet this afternoon to discuss the prime issue and then the saffron party scheduled to meet State Governor professor Jagdish Mukhi to stake claim to form the government in Dispur. The swearing-in ceremony may take place on Monday, where a number of senior party leaders including its national president JP Nadda are understood to be present.
Earlier, suspense that emerged after the counting of votes regarding the new chief minister reached New Delhi on Saturday as Nadda summoned both Sonowal and his cabinet colleague and primary aspirant Himanta Biswa Sarma. The first session began at Nadda’s residence with Sarma where other senior saffron leaders Amit Shah, BL Santosh, etc were also present. It was followed by another session with Sonowal and the third with both of them.
In fact, speculations aroused as the counting of votes for the State assembly polls, where the ruling alliance emerged victorious with 75 seats in the 126-member house, began with a positive trend towards the ruling party. It started with a number of elected BJP nominees pouring in Sarma’s residence on 3 May since the morning hours to congratulate him for the electoral victory. A series of specific reports in satellite news channels also added flavour to it.
