The Supreme Court Tuesday allowed the reopening of the Vedanta Sterlite plant in Tamil Nadu for production of medical Oxygen.
Advocate Harish Salve, representing Vedanta, assured the Court that the plant would be supplying 200 MT Oxygen per day. He also submitted that the plant would start functioning in the next 10 days.
The Tamil Nadu government had Monday submitted it had no problems with the reopening of the plant for generation of medical Oxygen.
The court also constituted an oversight committee.
Granting Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s and Harish Salve’s request, the Court agreed not to include locals and activists in the oversight committee.
The Solicitor General had requested the Court not to allow “outsiders under the garb of ‘activists’ or ‘environmentalists’”.
Following a violent protest in May 2018, the plant was shut down.
Following the second wave of the Covid-19, the country is witnessing a high demand for medical Oxygen.
