Vellimalaim( Silver mountain), located in the foot hills of Vellimalai In Kanyakumari district, is a hillock with Subramanya temple on top and surrounded by the lush green garden. The Vivekananda Ashramam located nearby to the temple was founded by Swami Ambikananda, who is a direct disciple of holy mother Sarada Devi. This ashram is the branch of ‘Sri Ramakrishna Mutt’. It has been serving the poor and conducting religious classes and organizing Thiru Vilakku Pooja (Lamp worship).

On 5th of this month, a day before the state went to the polls, Flying Squad conducted raids in the Ashramam. The team was led by Taluk Supply Officer Mary Stella with 8 members. They all entered the ashram wearing shoes and slippers ransacked the articles kept in the ashrmam. They have not found anything during the search. Irked by the raid and the disrespect shown to the ashrmam, Hindu Munnani and RSS leaders submitted a complaint with the District Collector. RSS west district president Rajendran, Hindu Munnani Divisional secretary Soman, district secretary Anand, VHP state joint secretary Kaliappan and others met the District Collector on 8th and urged him to take action against the officials.

They explained to the District Collector what had happened. The Flying Squad members wearing footwear throw the leaflets on the floor and walked on them. When the Ashram trustee Chaithanya Maharaj questioned why you are doing this, a constable Aruldoss, a Christian, replied to him in a third person singular. Did not give respect to this age and position of swami. In the name of raid, they have vandalized the ashrmam and shown disrespect and insult to the ashrmam head and his devotees. They wanted action against the Christian led team with an ulterior motive”.

Repeat of what had happened last year, this time also citing Covid 19 pandemic, Tamil Nadu government has issued a blanket gag order not allowing any Hindu festivals till further notification. Even the government said noPrasad like holy water, Sadari should be given devotees. Normally it is the time festivals in all big and small temples would be held. Family deities, village deity temples would celebrate fire walking and other festivals. Last year, the Tn government had allowed Muslims to celebrate Ramzan and Christians to gather for their festivals.

A similar situation is going to be repeated this time also. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader H Jawaharullah and other Muslim outfits have requested the government to increasing time for worship till 10 pm and permit opening of places of worship. The request was in a threatening tone. They have also requested the government to make available raw rice to make porridge during Ramzan fasting month. Both the AIADMK government and its police machinery allowed the Christians to organize Good Friday and Easter celebrations. But the same government now banned all Hindu festivals. “ During elections campaigning it was a free for all. Huge crowds were allowed. No mask, no social distancing norms were followed.

After the election, government citing Covid 19, restricts the rights of Hindu devotees. It did not restrict the working hours or shutting down of liquor shops which is the main source of gathering and spread of corona virus. No Hindu religious leaders or mutt heads voiced their protest to the government’s ban on Hindu festival. Unless their voice is heard with a strong vote bank, the minority will have their own way in getting things done in their favour. Hindu leaders have failed to follow the footsteps of Muslim and Christian leaders in making demands felt and forced the government to change rules” point out Rajesh of BJP.
