Guwahati: As the polling for the second phase of Assam legislative assembly elections began by 7 am this morning, the voter’s turn was recorded 48% till 1.30 pm. Conducted following strict security and Covid-19 guidelines, the exercise covers 39 assembly constituencies including 15 seats in Barak valley of the State. The fate of 345 candidates including 26 women will be decided by over 73 lakh voters by 6 pm.
According to the election authority, Assam recorded nearly 80% turnout in phase one polling. Among the 73,44,631 electors in second phase, here are 37,34,537 males, 36,09,959 females and 135 transgenders. Hojai constituency has the highest number of electors (2,65,886 voters), whereas Howraghat has the lowest one (1,32,339).
Most constituencies will witness the straight battle between the BJP led alliance and the opposition Congress-led Mohajoat (grand alliance). For the ruling alliance, State ministers Parimal Suklabaidya, Bhabesh Kalita, Pijush Hazarika, assembly deputy speaker Aminul Haque Laskar, saffron legislators Numal Momin, Rupak Sarma, Mihir Kanti Shome will seek re-elections from their respective constituencies. UPPL nominees Biswajit Daimary, Gobinda Chandra Basumatary etc are also in the fray.
