Modi Govt to Remove Physical Toll Gates on Highways, To Launch GPS-Based Toll Collection System

The Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari Thursday announced all the physical gates of toll booths across the country will be removed in the next one year.
Toll charges will be collected using a GPS system.
The minister was replying in the Lok Sabha.
He also informed the House 97 per cent of the vehicles have been paying toll charges through FASTag and 7 per cent are still using cash.
Since February 16 this year, vehicles are supposed to pay double the charges if not using FAStag.
Since the implementation of this policy, the government has seen a massive jump in the toll amount collection.
FASTags were introduced in the country in 2016 but have been made compulsory only recently.
It facilitates the toll charge payment through the electronic medium.
