Cracking the whip in the Sugar Mill Scam case, the Enforcement Directorate has attached properties worth INR 1097 crore of former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator Mohd. Iqbal.
A BSP leader, Iqbal was a Member of the Legislative Council in Uttar Pradesh.
Iqbal and his associates had purchased seven sugar mills for INR 60.28 crore when Mayawati, BSP president, was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2007-12.
Her government had auctioned the sugar mills.
The Enforcement Directorate has estimated the market value of the mills purchased by Iqbal is INR 1097 crore.
There is also a CBI investigation going on in the case.
In 2016, the Union government had told the Supreme Court that Iqbal had amassed properties and cash worth INR 10000 crore and floated 111 shell companies to carry out his transactions.
The investigation in the Sugar Mill Scam started after Yogi Adityanath became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in March 2017.
Iqbal and his two sons are accused in the case.
It is also alleged that many norms were floated to sell the sugar mills to Iqbal. He has registered seven shell companies in a day to purchase the mills.
