The Union government Friday announced a committee to commemorate 75 years of Bharat’s independence from colonial powers.

The 259-member committee will be headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The committee has members from all walks of life: politics, judiciary, sports, press, social service, cinema, art & culture.

The country will be celebrating 75 years of Bharat’s independence on August 15 next year.

The first meeting of the committee is slated for March 8. The terms of reference of the committee are “to provide policy direction and guidelines for the formulation of programs for the commemoration of 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, at the national and international level.”

The programs are supposed to start on March 12 of this year, to commemorate the Salt Satyagrah by Mahatma Gandhi.
Former President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and H D Devegowda are members of the committee. It has Lata Mangeskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Amartya Sen, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sharad Pawar, all the chief ministers and governors, members of the council of ministers, among others.

Leftist academician Amartya Sen, who was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government and lives in the United States, is a very vocal critic of the Modi government.
