Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat offered prayers at Sri Kadumbadi Chinnamman Temple in Ponniammanmedu, Chennai and participated in Pongal celebrations. Dr Bhagwat reached Chennai and performed a Gau Pooja before kickstarting the celebrations. Dr Bhagwat is on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu till Friday and will be meeting dignitaries in the state besides young professionals and start-up owners.

“During his visit, Dr Bhagwat will participate in a community Pongal celebration. He will meet young professionals and start-up owners and also likely to interact with dignitaries. As per his routine schedule, he will review the organisation’s work with local functionaries,” a press release by the RSS said.

Addressing the gathering during the Pongal celebrations at Kadumbadi Chinnamman Temple, Dr Mohan Bhagwat expressed happiness in participating in the event and noted that no other state apart from Tamil Nadu celebrated Pongal for three days. Further, the RSS Sarsanghchalak hailed the worshipping of the Sun and remarked that the humankind attempted to be like the Sun. Dr Bhagwat also advocated for the use of ‘sweet language’ while speaking instead of fighting.

In a video that went viral on social media, Dr Bhagwat was seen teaching a couplet on possession of self-restraint from Tirukkural, authored by Tamil savant Tiruvalluvar, to a girl of the RSS functionary’s family to whom he paid a surprise visit. Dr Bhagwat recited the Kural meaning “the wound burnt by fire may heal but not the one by the tongue.” And the girl responded to him by quoting a couplet on gratitude from the Tamil classic.
