Hong Kong democratic activist Honcques Laus, in a letter to the Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar has requested India to suspend extradition treaty with the Hong Kong and impose sanctions against Hong Kong and Chinese regimes. In the letter, Honcques Laus said “I, as a Hong Kong democratic activist, would like to extend an invitation to India to suspend the extradition treaty with the Hong Kong tyrannous regime, and impose more sanctions against the Hong Kong and Chinese tyrannical regimes, considering the interests of civil liberty and democracy.”
Criticising the new National security law imposed by the mainland China on Hong Kong, Laus said “Any extradition treaty with the Hong Kong totalitarian regime is a serious threat to Hongkongers overseas, Taiwanese people overseas, and freedom supporters of the world. The Hong Kong and Chinese regimes have blatantly violated civil liberty in Hong Kong. Numerous Hongkongers have suffered political persecution. In addition, the imposition of oppressive China’s National Security Law has resulted in more politically motivated arrests, prosecutions, imprisonments, and has caused many Hongkongers to flee from the homeland. Several democratic activists abroad are wanted under oppressive China’s National Security Law, including Samuel Chu, a United States citizen, and myself.”
He also mentioned that many of the common wealth countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand had suspended their respective extradition treaties with the Hong Kong post the National Security Law. Being a prominent member of the commonwealth, Laus hopes that India would also follow the same route. He expressed his gratitude to the Indian government for banning Chinese apps including PUBG, Wechat and Tiktok since these companies were involved in transferring the user data to the Chinese administration. Demanding more actions against the Chinese regime, Laus said “In the interests of democracy and safety, I would like to ask India to impose more restrictions on particular Chinese companies which are considered to be threats to freedom, as a portion of sanctions against the Chinese regime, so as to deter it from subverting the liberal world.”
China’s human rights violations in Hong Kong have received strong criticism from the global community. After the implementation of the draconian National Security Law, China had been witch-hunting democratic activists and Chinese dissidents.
