Liberally Hypocrites

The Liberal Party is a casualty. Indeed this is a very mild expression. The Liberals are ?the contemptibles? of Indian politics. To use the language of Norton used in another connection they are disowned by the people, unowned by the Government, having the virtues of neither, but possessing the vices of both. Today the relation of the Liberal Party to the Congress is that of a dog to his master. ? DR. BABASAHEB AMBEDKAR: WRITINGS AND SPEECHES, Dr. Ambedkar Foundation - Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerme

Having truly liberal and open-minded citizenry is the hallmark of democracy. Though liberally overused cliché of “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,” often preached by liberals, they seldom practice it. Two recent incidences about free speech are classic case studies to expose the hypocrisy of so-called liberals in Bharat, though even globally the story illebral practices by liberals is not very different.

The first case is related to senior advocate Prashant Bhushan who is known for flaunting his legal might to corner others. The tweets made by Prashant Bhushan against the Judiciary were blatant lies to further his political agenda. Accusing an individual without substance can put you in trouble with a defamation case. An activist lawyer, who is also a member of a political party, made statements against the entire judiciary and four Chief Justices of Bharat without any substance and threfore, is undoubtedly liable for the contempt proceedings. Why should we not consider it as a part typical Maoist strategy to use the Constitutional provisions to destrcut the democracy? Prashant Bhushan stands for the legal defence of such ideology. The liberals have every the right to argue for his free speech, but how can they forget that just a few months back the same Prashant Bhushan who was celebrating conviction in a contempt case. The gang that rose to defend Prashant Bhushan also did not argue against the contempt provisions but demanded exemption for a special member of their ghetto. Declaring some individuals as ‘more equal’ than others is not a liberal trait.

In another case, the nation realised that the similar underworld of ‘liberal’ gate-keepers is working not just in media, academics and legal professions but even in the publishing industry. The last-minute decision of Bloomsbury India not to publish a book titled ‘Delhi Riots – The Untold Story’ by three women authors is another case of liberal hypocrisy. The lame excuse of doing a pre-publishing launch and inviting some people with whom the masters of the publishing house disagree with is the biggest murder of free speech. Trail of the campaign against the book exposed the faces and character of the ‘liberal’ mafia. ‘Write a book to counter a book’ is just a slogan for them; not allowing anyone to write contrary to their established ‘liberal’ standards is the practice. In the age of social media, their bullying tactics could not work, and the authors opted for the other publisher with a due legal process. The response of ordinary people to the book is a tight slap on the face of monopolists and their masters.

The real problem with liberals is their intolerance towards the true liberal ethos of Bharat. For them, Islamist Supremacist attitude is secularism, and Communist perpetration of violence is a fight for justice. The resurgent Bharat is fighting back against this notion of liberalism. The people of Bharat are building their unique standards of liberal democracy based on the civilisational ethos. Denigration of self for pleasing others is no longer acceptable to the masses. ‘Liberal hypocrisy’ has been a facilitator in this process, but simultaneously they are contributing to the weakening of democratic institutions and divisions in the society based on binaries. As Dr Ambedkar had warned in his speech, it can be a disaster for the country in the long run. The so-called liberals should have an open mind at least to understand this fundamental reality of Bharat.
