PM Modi announces Rs 1,000 Crore relief for West Bengal after aerial survey
On May, 22 Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in West Bengal to take stock of the damage due to Cyclone Amphan, which left 80 dead and thousands homeless. The fiercest Cyclone to hit West Bengal in 100 years destroyed mud houses and agriculture crops, damaging power and telecom infrastructure in several coastal districts.
The PM said the damage caused by the Cyclone is extensive and the Centre stands with West Bengal in these testing times and will offer all support to help get the State back on its feet. Modi would next visit Odisha, which has also been impacted by the Cyclone.
The PM announced interim financial aid of Rs 1,000 crore to West Bengal and assured that the Centre and State are working together to provide all possible help to people. The death toll due to the Cyclone Amphan in West Bengal climbed to 80. The cyclonic storm had triggered heavy rains and high-velocity winds gusting up to 190 kmph in coastal areas of Bengal and Odisha.
“I assure my brothers and sisters of West Bengal that the entire country stands with you in these difficult times, “says PM Modi, he also announced that the Centre would give compensation of Rs 2 lakhs to the relative of the deceased and Rs 50,000 will be given to the seriously injured.
After conducting the aerial survey of the affected areas, PM Narendra Modi chaired a review meeting in Basirhat with CM Mamata Banerjee, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to discuss the relief measures.
“My thoughts are with all those who have lost their lives due to the Cyclone. Centre and State are working together to provide all possible help to people. With the Governor and CM, an aerial survey was done. They have also briefed me on the prevailing situation, the prime minister said.
The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) reviewed the rescue and relief operations in Bengal and Odisha at a meeting in Delhi. It was told that minimal loss of lives was reported due to accurate forecast by the IMD and timely deployment of NDRF troops.
