A 21-year-old nun was found dead in a well at a Christian convent at Thiruvalla in Kerala on Thursday.
The deceased, Divya P Jonny, a resident of Chunkapara, was a student of the Basilians Sisters Math and found dead in a well in the hostel compound.

According to the police, the exact cause of death is not known yet. The police said it will be determined only after receiving post-mortem report. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

As per the version of convent authorities, the incident happened around 11 am and Divya was found lying in a well when other inmates reached the spot after hearing the sound. Soon after this, the inmates notified the fire service and the police.

Meanwhile, Sister Lucy Kalappurakkal, an ex-nun who was expelled for being vocal about woman rights inside Chuch and convents, criticised the Church in the issue and demanded justice for the deceased’s family members. In her Facebook, Sister Lucy pointed out 15 odd incidents in which nuns were found dead under mysterious circumstances from 1987 to 2018. She also questioned the immoral and unholy activities happening inside the convents and says, she can’t remain a mute spectator anymore.

“At least this time, will police plug all loopholes and conduct the probe?,” she asks in her Facebook post.

Sister Lucy was expelled from the church for speaking up against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who was then accused of repeatedly raping another nun at Kuravilangad convent in Kerala’s Kottayam district between 2014 and 2016.

In 2018, Sister Susamma Mathew, a nun, was found dead in mysterious circumstances inside a convent well in Kollam.

Similarly, on March 27, 1992, a nun named Sister Abhaya, was also found dead in a well in St Pius X Convent in Kottayam. The investigation into this death is by far the longest-running murder investigation in the State of Kerala.
