Goddess Idol Vandalized in North Bengal; Love Jihad in the South

  

 

The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, is currently on a visit to North Bengal. On 22 January she led a procession against NRC, NPR and CAA in Darjeeling and was engaged in uniting the people of the hills against the laws of the country. A night before this, a very sad incident occurred in the neighbouring city of Siliguri.

 

Unfortunately, the Chief Minister of the State did not spend a word on it during her visit.

 

On the morning of 21 January, residents of Gatebazar area in Siliguri city were shocked to find the life size idol of Goddess Kali, the Hindu Mother Goddess of Shakti, lying upside down and broken inside the temple hall. This has left the God-fearing people of the area entirely outraged. According to the locals, it marks the eighth failed attempt of robbery to take away the jewellery of the Goddess. The robbers could not, apparently, break the lock of the temple. A bamboo used in desecrating the idol was found in front of the temple premises.

Neither was anything heard from the Mayor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, Ashok Narayan Bhattacharya. The civic body is now being run by the CPIM and Ashok Bhattacharya had been the Urban Development Minister in the Left Front Government in West Bengal. The police have filed a case.

 

While the news of the desecration of the idol of Goddess Kali came in from North Bengal, a girl was grievously injured in an attack of Love Jihad in the Hooghly district in South Bengal.

Soumi Pal, a third year student of Sarat Centenary College from Kachharipara of Dhaniakhali in Hooghly district, was attacked by her friend, Asgarh Mallik, a resident of the neighbouring Ghanashyampur.

 

Asgarh, an old friend of Soumi, works in a mill in the vicinity. He entered her house on the pretext of asking for a book. Asgarh fled after he cut Soumi’s neck with a sharp knife and is still absconding. Soumi’s relatives rushed her to the Dhaniakhali Rural Hospital, from where she was soon moved to Calcutta Medical College as the situation deteriorated. Her condition is reported to be still critical with sixteen stitches.

 

The two instances from the north and the south Bengal bear ample evidence to the current anarchy in the state.
