Varun Bopala, a volunteer returning from the Town Hall demonstration supporting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was attacked and stabbed by Jihadi elements in Bengaluru yesterday. He was on his way back home when he was attacked by bike borne Jihadis near JC road, which is close to the Town Hall. Varun was immediately rushed to Victoria Hospital and later shifted to another hospital. He is said to be out of danger but is still critical.
Kalasipalya police have registered a case and are investigating. The area where Varun was attacked is Bamboo Bazaar as per police report and has a sizable Muslim population. Many attendees at the pro-CAA demonstration opine that many of those who participated at the rally were tracked and followed by Jihadi elements and those who were at a vulnerable location were attacked.
It is also said that many Jihadi elements had hidden themselves amongst the crowd at the pro-CAA demonstration and has stones in their hands. However, police and alert participants ensured that they were not successful in their attempts to create unrest.
Bengaluru South MP visited Varun in hospital and urged police to conduct impartial investigation and bring perpetrators to justice swiftly.
Huge Demonstration supporting CAA
Earlier, thousands of supporters of CAA participated in a demonstration in front of Town Hall in the city. Speeches educating the people about the CAA were made by prominent speakers like Chakravarti Sulibele and Tejasvi Surya. Pro-CAA slogans were raised during the demonstrations. The demonstrators decried attempts made by several political leaders and organisations to mislead the people of the country over CAA.
However, a rally against CAA is being organised in Bengaluru today by many Muslim organisations. The city is on standby and police have said that they have taken all precautions to avoid a flare-up or untoward incidents.
