The political capital that Congress and its cronies tried to extract from the Rafale deal has hit a dead end. On November 14th, the Supreme court heard the petitions filed for review of its earlier order giving clean chit to the Modi government in the Rafale deal. However, the 3-judge bench of the SC has dismissed the petition which has brought Congress’ campaign of calumny to an end.
Review petitions were filed against the December 14, 2018 judgment of the SC which had refused to order probe into the Rafale deal made by the Modi government. The bench comprising CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph observed that the review petitions filed by Advocate Prashant Bhushan, former Union Ministers Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie lacked merit. Hence the review petitions were dismissed unanimously.
Supreme Court slams Rahul Gandhi
Despite the SC order, Rahul Gandhi had made disparaging remarks against PM Modi and had claimed that the SC had said the same. Following this, Lok Sabha MP Meenakshi Lekhi had filed a contempt plea against Rahul Gandhi for his statement against PM Narendra Modi following Apex court’s verdict on Rafale. Following the comtempt plea against his remarks, Rahul Gandhi had filed an affidavit expressing unconditional apology for wrongful attribution made to SC. Today, the SC bench accepted his apology but cautioned him against spreading lies using its name.
The SC observed that, “The contemptor (Rahul Gandhi) should have been far more careful…It is unfortunate that contemptor has made statements repeatedly which is far from truth. He must be careful in future”.
