Recent floods in Assam render thousands of people homeless in 28 districts; RSS and Sewa Bharati Purbanchal workers engage in relief activities since the day one

Guwahati: Over 30 lakh people have badly been affected in the recent devastating floods that caused havoc in 28 districts of Assam. The severity of the flood was so intense that thousands of families have been forced to take shelter in high land like the highway, side of Railway tracks and other high ground, wherein they had to live in makeshift camps leaving the village behind.

According to reports received from the affected districts, the total number of flood-hit people in the state are around 53,52,107 belonging to 4,128 villages under 103 revenue circles of 28 districts. The total crop area affected by the flood stands to be 2, 12,122.74 hectares. However, the cumulative figure concerning the flood-related deaths during the flood shot up to more than 40.
 
The ASDMA flood report states that many districts are still reeling under floodwaters. They include Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar and Karimganj.

As per their tradition, the Sewa Bharati Purbanchal and RSS workers swung into relief activities immediately after the floods. They are actively helping the people in the flood-affected areas. They have organised various relief camps in several districts with the support of the local people and organisations. Their relief activities include free medical camp, free goods distribution camp (like kitchen materials, etc.), cleanness and hygiene products distribution. They have also extended helping hand to the flood-affected people and their families in the rescue operation.

A total of eight medical camps were organised by Sewa Bharati Purbanchal with the support of several individual doctors and the doctors belonging to the National Medicos Organisation (NMO). A total of 1,565 individuals have been benefitted through those camps in Morigaon (two camps), Nalbari (two camps), Barpeta (three camps) and Darrang (one camp).

For cleanness and hygiene, Sewa Bharati, Purbanchal distributed Phenyl and Bleaching Powder to the families in the affected areas. About 1500 litres of Phenyl and 1100 kg of Bleaching powder have been distributed so far.
Free Goods distribution camps were organised in various flood-affected places. The goods included 50,000 litres of drinking water and 10,000 cartons of biscuit. Along with this material, some other goods and materials like rice, pulses, clothes, mosquito coils, etc. have also been distributed. Besides the relief camps, several volunteers of the Sewa Bharati Purbanchal have rescued the affected families.

Sewa Bharati Purbanchal wants to provide more services to the flood-affected people through the free medical camps, goods distribution, materials for health and hygiene, rehabilitation, etc with the support of the people and willing voluntary organisations as well as the society at large. The Sewa Bharati has appealed to the people to contribute the following items for the help of the flood affected people:
 
  1.  Water Purifier for Drinking Water Facility
  2. Bleaching Powder, Phenyl for Cleanness and Hygiene
  3. Goods, Foods, Clothes for daily use
  4. Material and Equipment for home use
  5. Medicines for Health
  6. Construction Materials and Equipment
  7. Educational Kits for students
