Students of Science can majorly go to the engineering or medical sides. But today there are many other alternatives as well. One can have a decent career in teaching after passing B Sc (Bachelor of Science) or M Sc (Master of Science).
With the expansion of multinational companies and industrial growth, the demand for engineering professionals has multiplied. One-third of technical experts in world today are from India. This is indicative of the huge opportunities seeking engineers from India for a bright future.
There is a range of National Institutes of Technology (earlier regional Engineering Colleges) in Durgapur, Calicut, Warragal, Srinagar, Kurukshetra, Tiruchirapalli, Suratkal (Karnataka), Rourkela (Odisha), Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh), etc. There are hundreds of government and private Engineering institutes and colleges as well which provide degrees.
Nonetheless, the most valued and respected engineering degrees are considered to be those of sixteen Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) (Bhubneshwar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mandi, Mumbai, Patna, Ropad, Roorkee and Varanasi). Apart from them, Pilani and Birla Institute of Technology in Ranchi, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (Patiala), Indian Institute of Science (Bengalore) are well respected.
JEE (Joint Entrance Examination)
All the IITs jointly notify the entrance exams around November- December every year, and last date for application is usually around January, February. All leading newspapers advertise this. JEE is usually organised in the months of April or May. The applicant must pass 10+2 or equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for appearing.
Types of Exam
In the new format of JEE, exam is conducted in two stages, namely JEE Mains and then JEE Advance. After passing JEE Mains, applicant becomes eligible for an application in the various registered institutes in the list of JEE. Since IITs and ISM are most valued and respected institutes, candidate has to appear in JEE Advance to secure a seat in them.  The merit holders of JEE Mains are only eligible to appear in JEE Advance,
Those candidates who qualify JEE Advance then become eligible to be admitted in IITs or ISM. There are some institutes apart from IITs which conduct All India entrance exams as well. These are NITs, Delhi Institute of Technology, Delhi College of Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia, School of Planning and Architecture, Aligarh Muslim University, National Dairy Research Institute (Karnal), Thapar Institute of Technology (Patiala), etc. Apart from these institutes and colleges, all states also conduct their entrance exams. These are notified in leading newspapers.
