A recent incident of eve teasing and an organised gang abetting it shocked Chennai residents recently. A woman aspiring for IAS,while walking on the footpath of Mannadi Salai, Chennai, was allegedly teased by boys from a Muslim street, who also tried tomisbehave with her. When herbrother questioned them he was assaulted by the group. When the family triedto lodge a complaint with the local police, Jihadi outfits gathered a crowd of 500, which threatened the family with dire consequences by the hooligans. Some miscreants also damaged the car ofcity secretary ofHindu Munnani, Shri Elangovanwhen hecame to visit the spot. As the news spread, hundreds of local people staged a demonstration outside the police station demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. One Shahjehan was picked up by the police. The injuredgirl and her brother were admitted in theStanley Hospital.
The local people observed a bandh on February 25. Shops in and around Sowcarpet, Muthailpet were closed. Ademonstration demanding police action was organised near Old Police Commissioner’sOffice, Egmore. More than 3,000 volunteers from various parts of the city participated in the protest. Sri Ram Gopalan, Hindu Munnani founder, said citizens from various parts of thecountry livein Chennai and they would not allow any disrespect to these brothers and sisters.
