WHAT is striking in Delhi campaign and also reflecting in various surveys and opinion polls, is a strong anti-Congress wave. Sheila Dikshit government is facing double anti-incumbency due to many factors. Popularity of Narendra Modi, credible face of Dr Harsh Vardhan and strong anti-Congress sentiments among the people is giving right combination for BJP to regain Delhi.
Double dent to the Development of Corruption: There has been high claims of development, experience and speed by the Congress, but what common people of Delhi are experiencing in day to day life is speed breakers of corruption. While centre grappling with the mega-corruption of 2G and Coal allocation, Sheila Dikshit government in Delhi is facing multiple scams from commonwealth, electricity, to transport. BJP led by Dr Harsh Vardhan is coming with agenda if clean and transparent government is catching the imagination of people. AAP riding on the anti-corruption plank is targeting Sheila Dikshit. Earlier Congress viewed it as BJP vote catcher. Now with his newfound ‘secular’ love and targeting the traditional vote bank of urban poor, he is giving serious dent to the Congress.
Sanitation and Water: After ruling Delhi for 15 long years, common man is struggling with the basic amenities of water and sanitation. If PLANNING DEPARTMENT, GOVERNMENT OF N.C.T. OF DELHI to be believed there is marginal increase in the water supply facilities from 9700 Kms to 11500 Kms in the last five years while length of internal sewers is increased from 6217 Kms to 7000Kms. Still, many areas of Delhi from Narela, Burari to Balli Maran to Tilak Nagar and Janak Puri lacks basic drinking water and sanitation facilities.
Higher Education for Toss: Delhi government is perhaps the best disciple of ‘privatisation and commercialisation’ programme of the UPA government. The increasing youth power facing less avenues for reasonable and quality education facilities. In the last 10 years there is no single college added in Delhi while only 1 Engineering college initiated with government support. All private institutions are mushrooming in the NCR areas, which are out of reach distance and cost wise for the common students of Delhi.
Inflation: It’s not only onions that are making Delhites cry, but the inaction of the Centre and state governments on increasing inflation of all the essential commodities have made the life difficult. There is an anger among the people for leaving them to market forces from all the corners.
“Unsafe” Tag: The biggest reputation Delhi has acquired in last 5 years is of being most unsafe city especially for women. Molestation and rape cases against women have become common. Law and order situation is crumbling. Unfortunately, Delhi voters do not get anything except false assurances and blame games.
All these issues are making the claims of BJP of initiating Metro project, establishment of Jhuggi Jhopadi Board, stability in prices of essential commodities and starting of Indraprasth University look stronger and viable. With BJP having clear cut majority in 3 MCDs of Delhi, it has fair chances of dislodging Congress Government.
