THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Tension prevailed at Edayar Island near Thiruvallam in the capital city near Poonthura where 35 houses were ransacked by a mob led by a Vicar of  a Church, in which nearly 50, including a few police men, have been injured.
The violent mob consisting of about 200 people from Moonnattumukku in the Island barged into the area and created a terror situation by hurling country bombs and attacking the locals with sickles and swords.
The violent mob thrashed women and children in their houses and smashed TVs, radios, VCDs, vehicles, windows and doors of their houses,  and  continued the assault for more than 50 minutes.
Though a police team led by a Sub-Inspector rushed to the spot, they could not do anything and withdrew from the spot fearing attack from the mob, carrying lethal weapons. A few policemen and the SI got injured when they confronted with the assailants.
Later, police burst teargas shells to disperse the mob. However, the mob returned to the area in the night with more numbers.
The violence erupted following a clash at a bar where some boozers have been manhandled by unknown people yesterday. Alleging that people from Edayar were involved in the incident, the mob attacked the houses in the area. It was reported that Hindus, Muslims and CPM workers were attacked and hospitalised in the incident.
