A help book for corporate career

By Tej N Dhar

Job Interviews, RA Padmanabha Rao and R Ramesh Chandra, Kalpaz Publications,  Pp 232 (PB), Rs 125.00

The rise of the corporate culture in India has spawned hundreds of coaching shops where candidates looking for jobs are trained in personality development and facing interview boards.  For people who cannot afford these, there are books on these subjects.  Job Interviews is a new addition to this growing corpus, but it is much more than a book on how to face interview boards; for it is a mine of information on everything related to examinations and jobs.
The book begins with a short chapter on personality development which, unlike many other books on it, stresses its varied aspects—social, financial, mental, physical, and spiritual, followed by a short discussion on things related to them. In big and small boxes, we also get personal stories of some distinguished people and interesting bits of information, too.
For the benefit of people seeking employment, the book has  a whole chapter on  career options in media—print, electronic, technical, creative, news, advertising, pubic relations—and the names of places where courses in these fields are offered in the country.   We also get similar information on hotel management, tourism, accountancy, and law. This is followed by a discussion on the main aspects of career planning, preparation of bio-data, and filling of applications forms. There are also details about the examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, All Indian Services, papers and subjects related to them, combined Medical Service Examination, and opportunities in navy, air force, railways and civil services.
Job Interviews is an interesting and useful book.  It contains vital information about scores of examinations held in the country, suggests methods for preparing for them, and provides tips for facing different kinds of interviews.
