ONE day, the novel by David Nicholls is about two people, a girl and boy, just out of college who stay overnight together and go their respective ways. They keep in touch through letters. The boy, Dex, son of rich parents goes travelling, the girl Em, struggles her way in theatre. Dex, several flings later takes a job as TV presenter, loses it. He gets married and has a daughter. Em realises her dream to be writer and publishes her first book. Dex’s marriage fails and he comes to Em, his best friend ever. Em and Dex finally acknowledge that they have always been in love. They get married. Em helps Dex start a café. But the story does not end there. Em dies in a road accident and Dex, left all alone is nearly an emotional wreck. His anchor this time comes in the form of his manager, who gives him the strength to see through Em’s loss. A sweet romance, current lifestyle and heavy emotion, that sums up the novel.
