TWO-day National Executive meeting of Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh took place in Shimla from June 12 to 13. The meeting unanimously passed a resolution urging the Central government to ensure that primary education is imparted in mother tongue only. A total of 86 delegates from 20 states participated in the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting Dr Chamanlal Gupt, chairman of Himachal Pradesh School Education Board said whatever is learnt in mother tongue becomes integral part of the life. He said a number of committees have been constituted in this regard, but a favourable decision has not been taken even after six decades of Independence.

Starting the discussion, Shri H Nagbhushan of Karanataka said all the leading personalities like Gandhiji and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore stressed on the importance of mother tongue. National general secretary of the Mahasangh Dr Vinod Bannerjee said the significance of mother tongue in primary education became more relevant after the government took the decision of compulsory education for the children from the age of 6 to 14. The Mahasangh has decided to organise seminars at tehsil and district levels to press upon this demand.

Earlier inaugurating the meeting, Rural Development Minister of Himachal Pradesh Shri Jairam Thakur said the Mahasangh is the only organisation, which can give new direction to the education sector. Shri Suresh Bhardwaj, MLA from Shimal, also praised the efforts of the Mahasangh.

Presiding over the meeting, national president of the Mahasangh Shri K Narhari expressed concern over the privatisation of education. Dr Vimal Prasad Agrawal spoke about the organisational matters.
