Lord King of West Bromwich, assisted by the Hindu Culture and Heritage Society UK, Ramgarhia-Sikh Heritage Trust and the Hindu Council UK, organised a landmark programme to pay tributes and respects to Satguru Ram Singh on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of first call for Home Rule in India. Five sitting peers of the House of Lords, along with politicians and other leaders of Indian organisations in the United Kingdom addressed over hundred invited guests to an hour and half of praise and honour for Satguru Ram Singh, who on the eve of the festival of Baisakhi, April 12, 1857, hoisted the white, triangular flag of the Kuka or Indian Independence Movement at Shri Bhaini Sahib in Punjab. It was this single act of defiance combined with the first ever-recorded use of the political tool of the boycott, that heralded the beginning of a 90-year movement of non-violent civil disobedience ending the British Raj in 1947.
Shri Amarjeet Singh Bhamra, who helped organise the event says, ?It provides us all with an opportunity to learn from Satguru Ram Singh'sunrelenting mission and the social deliverance, economic uplift, political emancipation and religious salvation it brought.? Two resolutions were also unanimously passed at the meeting demanding installation of a permanent monument of Kuka Movement. (FOC)
