Mangayar Mangalam, an NGO of Rashtra Sevika Samiti, organised an exclusive women empowerment rally on the occasion of International Women'sDay at Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district. More than 2,000 women participated in the rally.

Mangayar Mangalam, which has over 110 Self-Help Groups in this district, had started a signature campaign against the Central Government-sponsored yuva programme that envisages imparting sex education to primary school children from K.G. class onwards from the coming academic year. The signature campaign was inaugurated by the district Panchayat Chairman Ajitha Mano and Mangayar Mangalam district secretary Gowri Thulasi Muthu Ram.

Gowri Thulasi Muthu Ram said that sex education may be imparted only after the tenth class, as the children will be physically and mentally matured to understand the subject.

Professor Nagam Subramaniam urged the Government to close down Tasmac shops and implement prohibition as it would be in the interest of rural women especially the women from poor socio economic background. She said the government should be ashamed of filling it coffers with ?liquor money? and dishing out freebies to the poor, while impeding them by not implementing prohibition.  (FOC)
