Vivekananda University and Vijnana Bharati Pledge to revive the scientific heritage of India

Belur: A national seminar on Indian Scientific Heritage was held at Vivekananda University Campus, Belur, Calcutta. The two days? programme was jointly organised by Vivekananda University and Vijnana Bharati from February 23-24, 2007.

This was first of its kind organised in Kolkata. Seven hundred delegates from ten states representing various institutions and organisations participated in the seminar, was welcomed by Swami Atmapriyananda, Hon?ble, Vice Chancellor, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University. Prof. K.I. Vasu, national president, Vijnana Bharati gave the introductory remarks with snippets on the holistic methodology propionate by the ancient seers embracing all branches of science, engineering and technology.

Seminar covered topics ranging from algorithms present in the ancient Indian mathematical compositions to astronomical and metallurgical achievements, showcasing the works of Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta, Nilakanta. Delineations were also held on the contributions of the Indian scientists during the first half of the twentieth century. The contributions of Satyendra Nath Bose, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Harish chandra was put into perspective for appreciation of the younger generation. Eminent personalities from prestigious research institutes across the country delivered the key note addresses.

Prof. K.I. Vasu, Bangalore; Dr. M.D. Srinivas, Institute of Policy Studies, Chennai; Dr. A.K. Dutta, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata; Dr. K. Ramasubra-manian, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai; Dr.S.Raha, Bose Institute, Kolkata; Prof. R. Balasubramanian, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai; Dr. S.C. Bagchi, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata; Shri. L.N .Jhunjhunwala, disciple of Dr. Sathyendra Nath Bose; Shri. Nripen Acharya, consultant, civil engineer, US, were the prominent speakers of the sessions.

The series of lectures has succeeded in generating awareness among the youth, teachers and professionals from all spheres of society about the rich heritage of the Indians, bestowing them with an opportunity, inculcating in them a nationalistic spirit for keeping alive the lineage we had inherited over centuries.

Vivekananda university declared a chair in the university for Indian Scientific Heritage and decided to start a department for the same and Swami Atmapriya-nanda, vice chancellor announced a corpus fund of One crore rupees for the above programs.  (FOC)
