Weeks after the CPM led LDF came to power in Kerala in 1996, Panyannur Chandran, District Secretary of the BJP in Kannur and a strong symbol of the RSS resistance to the CPM'smurder politics in Kannur, especially Thalassery, was brutally murdered in front of his house, as his parents, wife and son helplessly watched by a ten member CPM hit-squad armed with bombs, swords, axes and matchettes. A trail of murders followed during the 1996-2001 period in which more than 25 RSS youths lost their life including K.T. Jayakrishnan who was butchered in front of the tiny-tots whom he was teaching.

Hardly seven weeks in power, the CPM regime has again started its old-game against the RSS, especially in Kannur, under the supervision of the State'sHome Minister and Thalassery strong man, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. The murder of an NDF activist, Yakub, in Punnad near Iritty in Kannur district who was involved in all sorts of terrorist and unlawful activities, extortions, sex and drug trade etc. proved the perfect background for Kodiyeri and his police to act against the RSS.

Like Panyannur Chandran in 1996, the target in 2006 was Valsan Thillankeri, Kannur Vibhag Prachar Pramukh of RSS, powerful and extempore orator, able organiser and symbol of the RSS resistance against CPM'smove to cleanse Kannur district of all opposing forces and ideologies, for the past two decades.

Valsan was arrested on charges of murder of Yakub, under section 302. In the FIR, Yakub was made a CPM activist, despite protests from his father and brothers who are members of NDF, a jehadi outfit. Two days later, the police officials released Valsan stating that he had no role in the murder of Yakub and also since he was under the constant threat of the CPM and the NDF, he was provided two fully armed commandos from the State police. How can a person who is under 24 hour protection of police commandos murder a person, was the contention of police officers. But two days later again under pressure from Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Valsan was rearrested, since the CPM wanted him out of Kannur for atleast some time to settle scores with the RSS and to build bridges with the jehadi the NDF.

Valsan started hunger-strike against his arrest, at the Kannur prison and as his situation deteriorated he was shifted to the Kozhikode medical college hospital. Valsan is continuing his fast at the hospital demanding repeal of the false murder charges.

Meanwhile, the RSS organisations which met at the Prant Karyalaya in Kochi, decided to intensify agitations on a State wide scale for withdrawal of false charges against Valsan Thillankeri.

As part of this decision, a huge protest meeting and fast was organised in front of the Government secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram, in which BJP leader, O. Rajagopal and Hindu Aikya Vedi President, J. Sisupalan participated.

Addressing the relay hunger fast in the Municipal Stadium corner in Kannur, the RSS Sah-Prant Karyavah, P. Gopalankutty alleged that the CPM is trying to stop the functioning of Hindu organisations by using the support of jehadi outfits and the police. The RSS Saha Prant Pracharak, J. Nandakumar alleged that the CPM which entered into truck with Madhani, Jamaat-e-Islami, Kanthapuram Musaliar etc. during the polls is now trying to tie up with the NDF to oppose the RSS, since they have common areas of interest. He said that Jehadi Yakub was adopted by the CPM to placate the Muslims and predicted a CPM-NDF axis against the RSS especially in North Kerala, where Muslim concentration is high. He also alleged that the arrest of Valsan Thillankeri is a CPM-NDF conspiracy to eventually eliminate him.
