VSK, Lucknow

Akhil Bharatiya Drishtihin Kalyan Sangh has decided to set up 100 eye banks all over the country. The Sangh will open 15 such banks in Uttar Pradesh alone. Talking to mediapersons in Lucknow recently, Dr Avinash Agnihotri, national project incharge, said that such banks had already been set up in Mirzapur, Sultanpur, Gorakhpur and Allahabad districts. He pointed out that there were about one crore forty lakh blind people in the country and about 30 lakh of them were blind due to corneal blindness, which could be cured by transplanting eyes. He said that out of about 90,000 dead people, hardly 22,000 people donate their eyes and about 9,000 people are successfully transplanted eyes every year. He pointed out that corneal blindness was zero in Sri Lanka where eyes had been declared a national property. Not only this, Sri Lanka provides eyes to 58 countries of the world free of cost.
