Sweet and sour mangoes
By Madhu Ved
Children, I believe, summer time spells mainly two things?holidays and mangoes (ripe and luscious, raw and tangy).
It is however the mangoes, both raw and ripe, which find favour in a host of dishes and are relished thoroughly. How tasty is the mango? Well, even gods fought over it.
A popular story often told is that Goddess Parvati had one raw mango, which both her sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya wanted. She promised to give it to whoever circled the earth thrice first.Immediately Karikeya took off on his peacock, while Ganesh smartly circled his parents thrice saying they represented the world. Parvati appreciated the answer and gave him the mango. Kartikeya on his return found Ganesh relishing the mango. He became angry. Mother Parvati felt bad for him. So she decided to ask for raw mango to make panna?a delicious cold drink for both of them.
Children, you too can make this drink at home and enjoy it like Kartikeya and Ganesha did.
