SJM on exploitation of mineral resources

By Sanjay Jena

The Orissa unit of Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) has strongly opposed the large-scale exploitation of the state'srich mineral resources. In a statement, Shri Bibhu Pradhad Nayak, state convenor, said that besides more than 35 MoUs signed to set up steel industries in the state, the state government was all set to sign another MoU with a Korean steel company called posco. ?If all the projects including POSCO come up, it will result in massive environmental degradation since the local environment has a limited capacity to absorb and assimilate effluents and wastes produced due to huge production activities in a short time period,? he said, appealing to the government to go slow on industrialisation.
