RSS Kheshtra Pracharak Shri Sunil Pada Goswami returned from Port Blair recently. He was in Port Blair to lead the Swayamsevaks carrying out the relief work there. About 13 Hindu organisation have been working day and night since December 26, while government was able to start relief work only after 48 hours. The UPA chairperson Smt Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh could get time to visit the camps only where Christians and Muslims are staying. Interestingly these non-Hindu sufferers were taken away from the camps of Hindu organisations to the new camps.
Many voluntary organisations like Vyakti Vikas Kendra, Vivekananda Kendra, Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, VHP, RSS, ABVP, BMS, BJP, Vidya Bharati, Sewa Bharati, etc jointly formed Dweep Peedit Sahayata Samiti (DPSS) and through this new setup they have been carrying out all the relief work in the affected areas in and around Port Blair and in other islands like Neil, Hutbay, Havelock, Campbell Bay, etc. A total of 250 volunteers from various organisations are involved in the relief activities. The members of DPSS have visited 24 camps, which include some arranged by the local administration. Altogether 2,493 members from 571 families have been kept in these camps where they are provided with basic items like food, clothes, and shelter. In total DPSS has supplied the above items in 24 camps worth Rs.2,00,000. Also DPSS has conducted medical camps in and around Port Blair in 15 different localities and served nearly 4,000 patients with medical help and medicines free of cost. So far DPSS has distributed medicines worth Rs. 8,00,000 through its free medical camps to the tsunami victims.
