S. Venkataraman is no more

S. Venkataraman, the former editor of Vijaya Bharatam, passed away in Chennai on November 3. He is survived by three sons and a daughter. He hailed from Pattukkotai in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu. He served as a teacher in a government school. After retirement he associated himself with the Shankara mutt at Kanchi as incharge of correspondence related to social and religious matters. He toured extensively with the Kanchi Shankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswati, in north during his vijaya yatra in the late eighties. He translated the Bharatistava of Kapali Shastry from Sanskrit to Tamil and wrote a short biography of Subramanya Shiva, the great freedom fighter of the Vande Mataram period in Hindi.

Jyoti Prakash Salunke passes away

Jyoti Prakash Salunke, a senior Pracharak in Bijapur and Bagalkot districts of Karnataka passed away on October 30. He was 80-years old. He was suffering from diabetes and leg pain for the last six months. Thousands of people from both the districts participated in the funeral. A Swayamsevak since childhood Salunke remained a Pracharak till he breathed his last. He guided the activities of the Sangh and its associated organisations for decades. During the Emergency in 1975 he led the underground activities. A condolence meeting was organised at V.V. Chowk on October 31 to pay homage to the departed leader. Prominent among those who spoke on the occasion included Dr S.C. Patil, Narayan Desai, Shrikant Kulkarni and others.
