The NDA convener and Defence Minister, George Fernandes, in a frank interview to The Economic Times, revealed that he considered Rahul and Priyanka also foreigners as at the time of their birth, their mother Sonia Gandhi was an Italian citizen.

George Fernandes has said, “Because when they [Rahul and Priyanka] were born, she was an Italian. And she was extending her stay in India, I think, every five years. She had not accepted Indian citizenship at all. So, her children were born when she had a) not taken Indian citizenship, and b) she was extending her stay as a foreigner. And this is documented. And it is a very serious matter.”

He continued: “Sonia´s origin is a far more serious issue than we have so far acknowledged it to be. Because she is an Italian citizen. Once you are an Italian citizen, you are an Italian citizen. Anyone born in Italy is an Italian citizen. And for that matter, her children are also Italian citizens.”

He further elaborated, “If we should have a PM or such person in any other higher echelon, it is very dangerous for the country. India has had its own experiences over a period of time. This country has been enslaved not once, but innumerable times.”

On the question of nationality George emphasised his conviction thus: “A couple of hundred horse riders came from Central Asia, crossed the Himalayas and defeated India which was at that point, perhaps a country of 10 to 15 crore people, and they ruled here with people accepting them as rulers. Then, another group of horsemen came after 100 to 200 years, defeated the ones who had earlier captured us, took over and ruled us all over again.”

He said that we all had Hindu ancestors: “I am not calling anybody a foreigner. I am saying they are carrying Italian citizenship. Your comparison does not make sense. My parents were Hindus. Most Muslims in this country had Hindu forefathers except those who came from Afghanistan and Central Asia. We all had Hindu ancestors. So a Christian name doesn´t make a difference. My son´s name is Sushanto. He has a father who was born to Christian parents. His mother was born to a Muslim father (Humayun Kabir) and a Hindu mother. So I always tell him you are the real Indian, free from caste, creed and religion.”
