The Sub Inspector of Police and four other policemen have been transferred from Madakkara in Kozhikode district for entering a mosque while intervening in a dispute between two groups. The transfers reportedly followed a complaint by the Indian Union Muslim League against the police action.
Police intervened, on August 26, to pacify two groups, one supporting Mahal Committee and another opposing. Police lathi-charged and dispersed the clashing groups. But, the Muslim League reportedly blamed the police for the entire episode.
The reports suggest that the present Khatib in the mosque was tipped to lead the Jummah prayer on Friday, August 28. Meanwhile, an allegation came up against the official Mahal Committee that Moulid reading was carried out under the leadership of Khatib. It ended up in alteration.
Muslim League alleged that the police entered the mosque without removing the boots.
Reportedly, the transfers followed a complaint by the Indian Union Muslim League against the police action, amid allegations of the dependence of Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan’s government on the Indian Union Muslim League.
Kozhikode Rural Superintendent of Police ordered the transfer of the police personnel according to the instruction of the North Zone Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police. SHO (Station House Officer) Shameel and four other personnel are the transferred police officials.
Observers believe that the state home ministry took quick action as soon as Muslim League issued its diktat. But, when anti-Hindu activist Sunny Kapikkad blasphemed against Sabarimala Sree Ayyappan, police took couple of days to register a case despite sharp complaints from the Hindu organisations. It proves that Satheeshan government practises double standard in dealing the issues of Hindus and minorities.
