New Delhi: Some people leave behind memories that time cannot erase. Ram Naresh Prasad Singh—widely known in Delhi’s intellectual circles as RNP Singh—was one such personality. A former government official, political candidate, author and lifelong student of history, Singh devoted the later decades of his life to deep study and research, leaving behind a body of work that continues to enrich India’s intellectual heritage.
His journey from public service and electoral politics to scholarship was marked by an unwavering commitment to learning. As a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the then Ballia Lok Sabha constituency of Bihar (now Begusarai) in 1998, Singh experienced the difficult realities of electoral politics before eventually distancing himself from active politics. He subsequently immersed himself in intellectual pursuits and took up responsibilities at the India First Foundation.
What made RNP Singh particularly remarkable was his ability to approach scholarship with the curiosity and discipline of a young student even in his later years. His books, including Riots & Wrongs and works dealing with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru and the ISI, reflected years of research, reading and engagement with historical documents. For Singh, writing a book was not a hurried exercise but a form of sadhana—demanding patience, intellectual honesty and sustained effort.
His association with Delhi’s intellectual and academic circles also brought him into close contact with writers, thinkers and public figures. For those who knew him personally, however, it was his humility, openness to discussion and relentless pursuit of knowledge that made him memorable.
His passing marks the end of a life devoted not merely to producing books, but to preserving a culture of serious study, dialogue and intellectual engagement. In remembering RNP Singh, one is also reminded of India’s enduring tradition of scholarship that often flourishes far from the glare of public recognition—in libraries, villages, conversations and quiet hours of study.
