Sugar Prices Rise: Government moves to curb hoarding, ensure adequate supply

The Government has attributed the recent rise in sugar prices to lower domestic production, festive-season demand, weather-related crop damage, tightening global supplies and speculation or hoarding

New Delhi: The recent rise in sugar prices has triggered concerns among consumers, particularly with the festive season approaching. The Government, however, has said that adequate sugar stocks are available to meet domestic requirements until the new crushing season begins in October and has stepped up monitoring to ensure stable supplies and prices.

As per the Union Government, the current increase in sugar prices is the result of multiple factors rather than a single cause. Lower-than-expected domestic sugar production, rising demand ahead of the festive season and weather-related damage to sugarcane crops have put pressure on supplies. Tightening global sugar availability has added to the pressure, while speculation and hoarding by some sections of the industry have also contributed to the recent price rise.

🌀What’s behind the current #sugar market situation, and what is the Government doing to ensure adequate supplies and stable prices?

Ethanol diversion not behind price rise

The Government has rejected claims that the recent increase in sugar prices is primarily due to the diversion of sugar towards ethanol production.

It has clarified that sufficient sugar stocks remain available in the country to meet domestic demand until the new sugarcane crushing season begins in October. The Government has therefore stressed that the price increase should not be attributed to ethanol diversion.

Focus on preventing hoarding and speculation

The Government has observed that speculative activity and hoarding by certain sugar mills and traders have contributed to the recent increase in prices. In response, authorities are closely monitoring the sugar market and taking measures aimed at preventing artificial shortages and ensuring that available stocks reach the market.

The objective is to maintain an adequate supply of sugar for consumers while preventing excessive price volatility during a period of heightened demand.

Festive demand adds pressure

The approaching festive season is another important factor influencing the sugar market. Demand traditionally rises during this period, increasing pressure on available supplies at a time when the country is awaiting the beginning of the new crushing season.

Despite these challenges, the Government has maintained that there is no immediate shortage of sugar in the country. Its focus remains on ensuring uninterrupted availability while keeping prices under control.

With the new crushing season expected to begin in October, market conditions could ease as fresh production enters the supply chain. Until then, continued monitoring of stocks, prices and trading practices will remain crucial to preventing hoarding and ensuring that consumers have access to sugar at reasonable prices.
