The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha has intensified its agitation against alleged irregularities and corruption in the Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC), with protests continuing for nearly two weeks and strong demonstrations being held before the Kerala Secretariat on August 8. The Yuva Morcha is demanding appointments for deserving PSC rank holders, transparency in the appointment process, accurate reporting of vacancies and an independent investigation into allegations of irregularities in PSC examinations and appointments.
Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha staged a strong protest before the State Secretariat on August 6 against the sabotage of Kerala Public Service Commission examinations and in support of the agitation by KPSC rank holders. The protest was organised by the Yuva Morcha Thiruvananthapuram North District Committee.
The protest march commenced from Palayam Martyrs Column. Police put up barricades to stop the march before the Secretariat. Police were provoking the peaceful marchers. When the marchers tried to overcome the barricades, there were pushes and shoves between the protesters and the police. The police worsened the situation and subsequently used water cannon against the protesters.

Several Yuva Morcha workers were injured and hospitalised. They include Yuva Morcha state secretary Akhil A.S., district general secretary Jishnu Navaykkulam, Jitin Kilimanoor and Bipin.
BJP state general secretary Adv. S. Suresh inaugurated the march. He alleged that the Kerala PSC has turned into a white elephant and described it as a place of third-rate people sans any qualifications. He said it had become a centre for looting the youth of Kerala and alleged that the officials were known for the practice of corruption.
According to Suresh, corrupt people are inducted into the hierarchy and the PSC has lost its credibility. He questioned what the qualification for such appointments was and whether involvement in political party work until their tenth class was the qualification.
Suresh said the Yuva Morcha had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging him to ensure appointments for LPST (Lower Primary School Teacher) rank holders. However, he said the Chief Minister had shut his eyes to the demand.
He said the youths of Kerala had been on the agitation path for more than a month and that agitations were gaining momentum in various sectors. The candidates were qualified for appointments as teachers, he said. Suresh also pointed out that the health condition of a girl candidate observing a hunger strike had been deteriorating, while the government had not expressed readiness for any discussion.

The BJP leader alleged that the present Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan had been following the same feudal chieftain attitude of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Both have the same face and policy, he said. The V.D. Satheeshan government came to power claiming that it would solve the issues faced by the youth of Kerala. However, even after two months since he took over, the issues remained unresolved, Suresh said.
Yuva Morcha state president Manu Prasad stated that the Yuva Morcha would remain on the agitation path until LPST rank holders received the deserving jobs. He said the candidates had studied well and passed the examinations in compliance with all parameters.
However, Manu Prasad alleged that V.D. Satheeshan was following the Pinarayi style of backdoor appointments by ignoring and neglecting deserving candidates. He said the Chief Minister was not ready to meet the candidates or discuss the issues they were facing. This, he said, was why the Yuva Morcha had started its agitation.
The Yuva Morcha leader warned that the agitation would continue until the PSC was “purified” and the grievances of the candidates were redressed.
The Yuva Morcha has also demanded a comprehensive investigation into allegations concerning PSC examinations and appointments. It has called for transparency in the appointment process, accurate reporting of blocked vacancies and the publication of complete details concerning vacancies and appointments. The organisation has also raised questions over the number of PSC members in Kerala and whether their appointments serve administrative efficiency or other political objectives.
The Yuva Morcha said its agitation was against the government’s negligence in “playing with the hopes and lives” of candidates and against irregularities in the PSC. It said the fight would continue with greater intensity in the coming days and would not end until justice was delivered to the rank holders.
Yuva Morcha Thiruvananthapuram North District president Soorya Krishnan presided over the protest. BJP state vice-president Adv. P. Sudheer, Thiruvananthapuram North District president Rejikumar and several BJP and Yuva Morcha leaders participated.
BJYM leader O. Nidheesh said: “Only the front has changed; in the PSC irregularities, Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan are two sides of the same coin. An independent and comprehensive investigation is essential to bring out the truth behind all allegations related to PSC appointments. The government must be prepared to bring all information regarding irregularities in the appointment procedures before the public.”
BJP MLA V. Muraleedharan, said: “While there are only 12 PSC members for the 20 crore population of Uttar Pradesh and 12 members for the 12 crore population of Maharashtra, Kerala, with a population of only 4 crore, has 21 members functioning in the PSC. Is there really a need for such a large number of members in Kerala, which is not the case even in larger states? It should be investigated whether these appointments are for administrative efficiency or for other political objectives…”
