Hindu Munnani has demanded that the Ramanathapuram Municipality stop its decision to demolish the Rajakaali Amman Temple, and alleged that the newly formed TVK is following in the footsteps of the erstwhile DMK in demolishing and targeting Hindu temples using the state machinery, without any official orders or court proceedings. Hindu Munnani alleged that the government is acting on a private complaint filed by a person imprisoned on corruption charges, without any public complaint.
The complaint questioned the status of the land on which the temple is constructed.
Hindu Munnani district president and advocate Ramamurthy told Organiser that the land on which the temple was located, along with the surrounding lands, was donated by one Srinivasa Iyengar in 1968 in a proper manner and as required by law.
These were duly recorded in the documents available in the District Collectorate’s settlement deeds. These documents became available to the temple management only recently.
A private person filed a petition in the Madras High Court claiming that the presence of the temple was a hindrance and sought directions to the authorities to demolish it. Due to the non-availability of the crucial documents, their petitions were rejected by the court.
After the availability of the documents, a petition was filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, which came up for hearing on June 29.
Their counsel contended that no member of the public had sought the demolition of the temple, but that a man who was imprisoned in a corruption case had moved the court. The municipality, based on his petition, has been trying to bring down the temple.
The court has not given any order to demolish the temple. If they stop the demolition move, it would not amount to contempt of court.
Moreover, a new petition is pending before the High Court with new documents to support our claim.

Hindu Munnani has also submitted a petition to the District Collector with details. It has requested him to stop the demolition of the temple forthwith until the court decides on the new petition, supported by sufficient documents filed by them.
In another development, the Indian National League (INL), led by State President M. Nagoor Raja, has urged Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to build a memorial for Ahmed Ali, also known as Palani Baba, a Muslim activist and founder and leader of the All-India Jihad Committee in Tamil Nadu. He was murdered in 1997 at Pollachi near Coimbatore.

It is pertinent to note that when the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was very active under different names in different states across the country, the ‘Jihad Committee’, founded by Palani Baba, and ‘Al Umma’, founded by SA Basha, were created in Tamil Nadu. They started inciting communal riots on a small scale through attacks and killings.
The attacks on former BJP president late Jana Krishnamurthy and Hindu Munnani founder Ramagopalan in the 1980s were among such brutal attacks, as was the murder of Hindu Munnani leader Rajagopal in October 1994. He was a fundamentalist and was responsible for bomb blasts in Tamil Nadu, besides attempts on and the killing of Hindu leaders.
With a lone IUML MLA as a minister, the outfit is coercing the TVK government to meet its demands. Earlier, it sought to raise the quota for Muslims in jobs and education from the current 3.5 to 5 per cent. It is alleged that, to pacify them, the TVK government has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court on the Thiruparankundram Deepam case.
In a related development, Hindu Munnani is planning to hold a protest on July 12 at Thiruvattar Junction in Kanyakumari district, condemning the government for not closing churches and other illegal places of worship in the district despite court orders.
