Bhubaneswar: In a significant cultural and spiritual initiative, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on June 15 formally launched the historic ‘Somnath Swabhiman Yatra-2026’, marking the beginning of a special pilgrimage journey connecting Odisha’s rich spiritual heritage with the revered Somnath Temple in Gujarat.
The Chief Minister flagged off a special train from Bhubaneswar carrying more than 1,100 devotees and pilgrims from across Odisha to the sacred Somnath shrine at Prabhas Patan. The yatra forms part of the nationwide ‘Somnath Swabhiman Parv’, a year-long cultural and spiritual commemoration being organised to celebrate a millennium of unwavering faith associated with the historic temple.
Addressing the gathering, Majhi described the pilgrimage as far more than a conventional rail journey. “This is not merely a train journey; it is a journey of faith, devotion and cultural self-respect. It represents the enduring spiritual traditions that unite the nation,” he said.

The Chief Minister emphasized the symbolic significance of the pilgrimage, noting that Lord Jagannath in the East and Lord Somnath in the West serve as two powerful spiritual anchors of India’s civilizational heritage. According to him, these sacred centres embody the values of unity, spirituality and cultural continuity that have bound the country together for centuries.
Commemorating Two Historic Milestones
The Somnath Swabhiman Parv commemorates two landmark events in Indian history. The first marks 1,000 years since the first recorded attack on the Somnath Temple by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026. The second celebrates the 75th anniversary of the temple’s reconstruction and re-consecration following India’s Independence, an effort inspired and championed by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Officials said the nationwide observance has been conceived as a tribute to the resilience of Indian civilization and the enduring faith associated with one of the country’s most revered Jyotirlinga shrines.

As part of the commemorative initiative, the Ministry of Culture has coordinated large-scale pilgrimage programmes across the country. Besides the special train from Odisha, more than 1,008 devotees from Lucknow and nearly 1,300 devotees from Delhi are also undertaking similar journeys to Somnath, reflecting the pan-Indian participation in the celebrations.
Strengthening Spiritual Bonds Between Odisha and Somnath
Highlighting the deep spiritual connection between Odisha and Somnath, the Chief Minister announced that sacred water from the historic Bindusagar pushkarini in Bhubaneswar’s Ekamra Kshetra and holy soil from the ancient Kedar Gouri Temple have been sent aboard the special train for ceremonial offering at the Somnath Temple.
He described the sacred offerings as a symbolic spiritual bridge connecting two important centres of India’s religious heritage. The gesture, he said, reflects Odisha’s contribution to the nationwide celebration and reinforces the cultural ties between the eastern and western regions of the country.
Each pilgrim participating in the yatra has been provided with an “Om Namah Shivaya” booklet. During their visit, devotees will participate in a range of spiritual activities, including temple darshan, Maha Aarti, Rudrabhishek rituals, continuous Omkar chanting, devotional programmes and a state-of-the-art light and sound show depicting the temple’s rich historical legacy.
Heritage and Development Together
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” (Development as well as Heritage), Majhi highlighted the extensive transformation of Somnath into a modern pilgrimage destination while preserving its historical and spiritual significance.
He noted that the development of modern exhibition galleries, museums, sea-view promenades and world-class pilgrim facilities under the PRASHAD scheme has significantly enhanced the visitor experience. These initiatives, he said, demonstrate how heritage preservation and infrastructure development can progress simultaneously.
The Chief Minister also pointed out that Somnath has emerged as a model for integrating cultural conservation with modern amenities, ensuring that future generations remain connected to India’s civilizational roots while benefiting from contemporary facilities.
Cultural Heritage and National Integration
Speaking at the event, Odisha Minister for Odia Language, Literature and Culture, Suryabanshi Suraj, said the state was sending sacred symbols of Odisha’s spiritual heritage to Somnath through the yatra.

“The holy waters of Bindusagar carry Odisha’s message of devotion, faith and cultural unity. These sacred offerings symbolize the deep spiritual bond between Odisha and Somnath,” he said.
The minister noted that the initiative would further strengthen cultural exchanges and foster a deeper understanding of India’s shared spiritual traditions.
Celebrating a Millennium of Faith, Resilience and Cultural Heritage
It may be noted that the Somnath Temple stands as one of the most enduring symbols of India’s spiritual heritage, cultural resilience, and national consciousness. For centuries, the sacred shrine has witnessed repeated cycles of destruction and reconstruction, yet it has continued to inspire generations with its unwavering legacy of faith and devotion. More than a place of worship, Somnath represents the indomitable spirit of a civilization that has preserved its identity through adversity and remained deeply rooted in its cultural traditions.
The Somnath Swabhiman Parv has been conceived as a nationwide commemoration marking 1,000 years of unbroken faith and devotion associated with the historic temple. The initiative seeks to strengthen cultural awareness, foster national pride, and encourage a deeper appreciation of India’s rich and diverse civilizational heritage.
The celebration commemorates two landmark milestones in India’s historical journey. The first marks one thousand years since the first recorded attack on the Somnath Temple in 1026, while the second observes the 75th anniversary of the temple’s reconstruction and reopening in 1951 following India’s Independence. Together, these milestones symbolize both the challenges faced by the nation and its remarkable capacity for renewal and resurgence.
Through a series of cultural, spiritual, and educational programmes, Somnath Swabhiman Parv aims to reconnect people—particularly younger generations—with the nation’s enduring heritage and values. The initiative emphasizes that Somnath’s legacy is preserved not merely through its architecture, but through the continued transmission of faith, traditions, and collective memory.
