GUWAHATI: BJP registered a splendid win in the Nagaon LS constituency by-election with a margin of over 1,69000 lakh votes. BJP’s Debasish Sharma defeated his nearest rival, AIUDF chief Badaruddin Ajmal by a huge margin in the minority dominated seat. Interestingly, Congress finished in third position winning the 2024 election by a margin of over 2.50 lakh votes. Just ahead of the Assam Assembly election 2026 Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi switched over to BJP and was elected as MLA from the Dispur constituency. The by-poll for the Nagaon LS constituency was held on 6th October. The voter turnout was 76.19 per cent. Nagaon constituency has 19.05 lakh voters, including 9.43 lakh women voters.

Interestingly the constituency has slightly over 62 percent of Muslim voters. Congress party has 3 MLAs in the constituency while another minority dominated assembly constituency under Nagaon LS is represented by Raijor Dol, a former alliance partner of the Congress. BJP has four MLAs under the Nagaon LS constituency. In the Hindu majority Nagaon-Batadrava, Raha, Morigaon and Jagiroad assembly constituency the BJP candidate comfortably took lead while in the minority assembly constituencies also the saffron party managed to get sizable numbers of votes. BJP candidate Debasish Sharma gets 6,71,090 lakh votes and AIUDF’s Badaruddin Ajmal gets 4,97,453 lakh votes. Meanwhile, the Congress candidates managed to get only 1,19,392 lakh votes only. Interestingly the security deposit of the Congress candidate was forfeited for not getting even one sixth of the total votes.

Meanwhile, before the declaration of the final result, Congress leadership started playing the old tape of EVM manipulated by BJP. The party which lost its minority vote bank to the AIUDF merely six months after the state assembly election, blames EVM for the devastating defeat. State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi who is in Delhi currently blames the EVM and ECI for the defeat. Rijor Dol chief and former alliance partner of Congress party, Akhil Gogoi said that Gaurav Gogoi doesn’t have the moral right to remain the state president of the party and he should immediately step down. After the splendid win CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, BJP has secured a decisive victory in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, a seat previously held by the Congress. Our candidate  Devasish Sharma has emerged victorious in a seat not traditionally considered our stronghold, with the Cong pushed to third place. This result reflects Adarniya Modi ji’s popularity across communities and the continued trust the people of Assam place in his vision of a Viksit Bharat. “I thank the people of Nagaon for this resounding mandate and promise to carry our Vikas journey forward with greater vigour. My heartfelt gratitude to our karyakartas, who ran a spirited campaign under the guidance of our Adarniya Adhyaksh  Nitin Nabin ji”, he said.
