Fact Check: Indian Army did not shoot two women or burn houses in Manipur, claim is false

A social media post claims that the Indian Army shot two women and burnt their houses in Manipur on the orders of an Eastern Command commander. The post wrongly links two separate incidents in Manipur and found no credible report supporting the Army-related claim

A claim is circulating on social media that the Indian Army shot two women and set their houses on fire in Manipur. The post also claims that the alleged attack was carried out on the orders of Lieutenant General V. M. Bhuvana Krishnan, Commander of the Eastern Command.

However, the claim has been found to be false and misleading.

A detailed investigation shows that, the viral post has mixed up two separate incidents that took place in Manipur on September 15.

What does the viral claim say?

The viral post alleges that the Indian Army killed two women and burnt their homes in Manipur.

It also claims that the alleged action was ordered by the Eastern Command commander and that it led to a serious deterioration of the situation in the state.

The claim was shared on social media along with visuals from the incidents.

What actually happened?

Reports cited in the fact-check show that two separate incidents took place in different districts of Manipur.

In the first incident, two Kuki women were shot dead by unidentified armed attackers at Leisangphai village in Tamenglong district on September 15, 2026.

Later that night, suspected militants attacked Chawangkining Naga village in Kangpokpi district, according to reports.

Security forces deployed in the area exchanged fire with the attackers.

During the incident, two houses on the outskirts of the village were set on fire.

The two incidents were separate, but the viral post linked them together and claimed that the Indian Army was responsible.

What do reports say about the house fires?

A report published by The Times of India said suspected militants attacked Chawangkining Naga village at around 10:30 pm on September 15.

CRPF personnel in the area returned fire. The exchange of fire reportedly continued for nearly six hours, until around 4:30 am.

An official quoted in the report said the security forces prevented the attackers from entering the village. However, two wooden houses on the outskirts of the village were burnt.

A report by The Hindu also said suspected militants attacked the village and exchanged fire with security forces before at least two houses were set on fire.

What did the facts say?

Various fact-checkers also carried out a reverse image search of visuals used in the viral post.

The same visuals were found on the YouTube channel Ukhrul Times. The accompanying information linked the visuals to the September 15 incident at Chawangkining Naga village.

The investigation found no credible report confirming that the Indian Army had shot the two women or ordered the burning of the houses.

There was also no credible evidence linking the incidents to Lieutenant General V. M. Bhuvana Krishnan or the Eastern Command.

Two incidents were linked together

The main issue with the viral claim is that it combines two separate incidents.

Incident 1: Two Kuki women were shot dead at Leisangphai village in Tamenglong district.

Incident 2: Suspected militants attacked Chawangkining Naga village in Kangpokpi district. Security forces exchanged fire with the attackers, while two houses were burnt.

There is no credible evidence in the reports cited by the fact-check that these incidents were carried out by the Indian Army.

Claim: Indian Army soldiers shot two women and burnt their houses in Manipur on the orders of the Eastern Command commander.

Fact Check: False and misleading.

The viral post links two separate incidents and wrongly attributes them to the Indian Army. Available reports instead describe unidentified attackers killing two women in one incident and suspected militants attacking a village in another incident where two houses were burnt during the violence.
